Batesford - a river runs through it
In the heart of the Moorabool Valley, the Batesford Pub overlooks the river of the same name. For the most part Batesford is a collection of bush blocks, paddocks and hobby farms or “lifestyle properties.” Hobyah’s roam at night where the old drive-in cinema once projected films to carloads of kids in pyjamas, as hot and heavy teens found inspiration point.
For those seeking peace, quiet and open space that’s not too far off the beaten track, it’s a short drive into Geelong and an hour door to door to Melbourne, assuming no traffic.
Prices sit at the higher end of the spectrum for this region with plenty of options around the $1 million mark. There’s land releases from time to time if you’re chasing your own grand design dream home on an acre or more.
This rural living haven also has a small primary school- Rollins has a Batesford Campus on the Midland Highway. Western Heights Secondary College is a nearby state option and Kardinia International College (9-12) is the closest private school. Bell Park Football Club facilities are located in Batesford too when you fancy a kick of the knacker.
Moorabool Valley wines enjoy a growing reputation. There’s new and interesting varietal plantings extending west as far as Buninyong and Ballarat. Batesford is a great base to explore and taste some unique operators from right across the Valley. Move locally, and it may become a vocation.
